Mid July GARDEN UPDATE - Week 5

 


Join me as I make my first tomato and pepper harvest of the year.  I also made a beautiful flower bouquet for the Veggie Chompers 2021 Garden Photo Rally.  I live in Canada and this is what I grow in zone 5B.

First Project of the Summer : E Shaped Raised Garden Bed

We started the season with a HUGE project.  It's was huge for two reasons.   First, this raised bed was to be big enough to (hopefully) allow us to grow lots of food for the year to come.  Secondly, the whole material getting and transporting demanded a lot of creativity and quite a bit of elbow grease.  We managed to do everything with our two seddans! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rmgAqYwFFA8&t=70s The idea for this project came from The Gardening Channel With James Prigioni on YouTube.  Recently, he posted a video tutorial showing how to build a raised bed from pallets.  Since budget is an issue during these uncertain times, we started to look for FREE pallets.  Finding them on the side of the road or asking friends on Facebook, we were able to find all the pallets we needed to make our raised bed (and more!).  BUT, since we don't have neither a truck nor a trailer, we had to cut the pieces on site and transport the pre-cut pieces of wood in our Corollas.  Y

  I have been busy preserving an abundance of fresh vegetables from the garden but the cold fall weather is catching up.   My backyard garden is about dead at this point but it’s not the case for my raised garden beds, as you will see in this video. I listened Jessica Sowards and I turned my waiting room into a classroom

    Photo by Green Chameleon on Unsplash I'm dreaming about owning a small farm where I could grow enough food for our family and have a small roadside farm stand to sell all kinds of vegetables, flowers and breads.  I imagine a romantic setup in the garden, with bird houses, a creek, a little bridge, string lights and a swing surrounded by beautiful flowers.  I want a dreamy farm where people would be able to come and have their wedding pictures taken.  It's difficult to find the proper words to express how exciting this dream is for me and how much my soul hurts with impatience for it to become my reality.  But while it is not possible for us right now to move to the country, Jessica Sowards, from Roots and Refuge Farm on YouTube, gave me a very wise advice : ''Turn your waiting room into a classroom''.  And I did just that!  A year ago, I made a list of all the skills I wanted to learn to become as self sufficient as possible.  I wrote more than 100 skills o
